Congress opposes Shivaji Park’s renaming as ‘Shiv Tirth’

Mumbai: Maharashtra Congress has dismissed Shiv Sena’s demand for renaming Shivaji Park as Shiv Tirth stating that it will be an attempt to distort the history. Shiv Sena is demanding of renaming Shivaji Park, because Shiv Sena chief Bal Thackeray was cremated at this ground.

Shivaji Park was named after Maratha King Shivaji in 1927 by the British. Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee issued a statement which said that, “Shiv Sena is trying to bring in a proposal in this regard in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Congress corporators will strongly oppose renaming of Shivaji Park as ‘Shiv Tirth’.”

Statement further stated that, “Shivaji Park is named after Maratha warrior king Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj. Chhatrapati Shivaji is considered as a deity by eleven crore people in the state.”

The Shivaji Park ground was the spot where, late Shiv Sena Chief Bal Thackeray used to address Shiv Sainiks for more than 40 years.
