Mumbai: As the petrol and diesel prices are soaring high, The Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) will okay its previous decision to hike bus fares by a rupee from April 1.
On Tuesday, at the BEST committee meeting, General Manager Om Prakash Gupta reported that, the budget estimates for 2013-14 had indicated a fare hike of only one rupee. But with the hike in diesel prices every month and an expected hike in CNG rates, BEST will not be able to survive with a Re 1 hike. Either the BMC, state or Centre should give us subsidy or else, BEST will be left with no option but to go for a bigger hike.
He also insisted that, “The government or the municipal corporation should take a ‘sympathetic view’ and give subsidy in the next fiscal year. As the annual burden due to the diesel hike is around Rs 55 crore.”
Meanwhile, the BEST also announced a change of bus routes from March 1.
