It was expected to be a stunner of a performance, and it was that, as for the 3rd time, the Olympic Games were held in London and held its mega opening ceremony yesterday, Friday, 27th July.

With a crowd of 80,000 viewers, on sets that are believed to have cost 27 million pounds and involving 10,000 performers, the three-and-a-half-hour extravaganza which was a picture of Victorian English countryside was called transformed into British countryside for an opening ceremony that depicted the theme of “Isles of Wonder”. Right from the opening scene ‘Green and Pleasant’, which made use of real farmyard animals on stage, to the part entitled ‘Pandemonium’ which glorified how Britain was the birthplace of the Industrial revolution, to ‘Second to the right and straight on till morning’, which glorified Britain’s contribution to children’s literature and its National Health Service, the show left audiences in a whirl of light, color and sound.

Artistic Director of the London 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony, Danny Boyle, claims that “Our Isles of Wonder salutes and celebrates the exuberant creativity of the British genius in an Opening Ceremony that we hope will be as unpredictable and inventive as the British people” and was designed to give Brits a “picture of ourselves as a nation”. All this, set in the brand new Olympic stadium in London, was a sight to be experienced to be believed.

The program was attended by more than 100 heads of state and visiting dignitaries, and also representatives and athletes from many countries that were being ravaged by internal war and strife, all of whom had suffered many odds just to be at the 2012 Olympics. The ceremony was declared open by Queen Elizabeth, who was at the venue with her husband the Duke of Edinburgh. “I declare open the Games of London, celebrating the 30th Olympiad of the modern era,” the Queen said.

The ceremony began with the hoisting of the Olympic flag as well as the flags of each of the competing nations, with their individual national anthems being played. The Olympic oath was read by Sarah Stevenson, Taekwondo silver medallist at Beijing 2008, after which Mik Basi, a boxing referee born at Newham, read the judges’ oath followed by Eric Farrell, MBE, who read the coaches’ oath. At the end, the Olympic Flame entered into the Stadium and the Olympic Cauldron was ceremoniously lit by the final Torchbearer.

The fireworks that sounds in London yesterday night will always be remembered by viewers throughout the duration of the Games.
